This site is a tribute to Sally Dilley, a much-loved wife, mum, gran, sister, friend and doctor.
Sally was born in Reading on June 10, 1961, and after attending Kendrick School, studied medicine at Southampton University. She trained as a GP and was a partner for over 30 years at Beauchamp House in Chelmsford. She was highly respected as a family doctor and GP trainer, and as a wise and supportive GP appraiser across other local practices. In 2015 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners in recognition of her reputation for excellent clinical practice and patient care.
Sally lived in Chelmer Village and enjoyed family life with her husband Peter, her sons John and Stephen, her daughter-in-law Dawn and granddaughter Scarlet. She was an active member of the congregations at Church of Our Saviour in Chelmer Village and then at Chelmsford Cathedral, where she set up a new book group, reflecting her love of reading. She was also a keen walker, particularly on family holidays.
In 2018, Sally was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer. She continued to enjoy a good quality of life for nearly six years while undergoing treatment, and was interviewed by the BBC about the pioneering drug trial in which she took part. Sadly, the cancer became more active in 2024, and she died peacefully in Farleigh Hospice on Wednesday 2nd October, surrounded by her close family.
Sally will be hugely missed by all who knew her. There will be a service of memorial and thanksgiving at Chelmsford Cathedral on Thursday 21st November at 12pm, to which all are welcome.
